The video is based on the story of a person who recalls experiences, feelings, and thoughts living as an intersex in Post-Soviet times. The main character owns a zero chromosome and can’t identify himself as a man nor woman. He is rethinking the past, present and future, searching for his own place in a world beyond the constraints of gender.
The video work consist from Skype Interview and a landscape, which were filmed outside countries of the former Eastern Bloc. The interview lasted for three hours. The scenes in the video are not cut together in a biographical or informative format (as a documentary would have been) in order to encapsulate the story on a deeper, more personal level.
“XX0Y” is a meditative work that draws on my interests in the dual searches for cultural and self-identity. My generation, born in the early 1990's, is tending to self-determination, trying to reinvent itself and explore the possibilities of post-identity politics.
