K4 presents All the things they're all about, the first solo presentation in Scandinavia by the French Paris based artist Rafaela Lopez. The exhibition brings together three films in a joint installation. The first, Showtime, follows for an extensive time the daily life of a group of young Litefeet dancers whose work is to turn the subway wagons of New York City into a dancing stage for the passengers through the constant back-and-forth between different lines.
The second film, Crush, is shot in Rafaela Lopez's former high school, the Lycée Adolphe Chérioux in Vitry-sur-Seine. It takes as its starting point the Instagram account @crush_lyceecherioux where students post anonymous classifieds declaring their love for other students, and paints a portrait of a generation and the way it thinks about love, society and sexuality. The third film Your Eyes, They're Sparkling Like Coca-Cola, is a diptych in connection with Crush. Our Eyes, They're Sparkling Like Coca-Cola, is shot in Beau Soleil middle school in Chelles.
The three films by are gathered in an exhibition for the first time.
They borrow the language of documentary but are edited to the rhythm of the subjects own media culture, and daily life, drawing on internet archives and chains of self-recorded app commentaries.
Rafaela Lopez develops a practice spanning video, installation, sculpture, performance, drawing and collaborative projects. Informed by specific social contexts, her work engages with marginal, vernacular or non-legitimized creative practices, as well as the forms of representation collectively produced within them. Through hybrid dispositifs, she explores the ways individuals construct identities and culture by bricolaging from imaginaries shaped by mainstream culture, social media and the entertainment industry. Her projects question the necessity of the creative gesture within given social, affective or economic contexts, and examine how certain practices can shift representations and operate changes of status. Through these situated forms of creation, her work investigates the porous boundaries between art and life in the contemporary world.
Rafaela Lopez studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, the Villa Arson and the Royal College of Art, from which she graduated in 2015.
